Top notch dialog and characters lifts this otherwise simple story out of the average and into the superb with the unforgettable performances from Paul Bettany (Chaucer) and Alan Tudyk (Wat) simply providing icing on the cake.
Archive for the “cinema” CategoryBy spending too long introducing the characters, X-Men misses the mark and goes from what could have been a superb action movie to what is basically an average bland and flawed action movie. More of the same, American Pie 2 doesn’t pretend to be anything other than American Pie all over again, not quite as funny, not quite as cute, but worth seeing and with enough laugh-out-loud moments to help you forget your real life.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s StonePosted by tony in 2001, cinema, comedy, fantasy, reviewA faithful to the book, enjoyable and decent movie let down by terrible acting by the main star and redeemed only by superb performances from those people around him. A mixed bag of a movie, Tomb Raider is certainly a better-than-average game-to-movie conversion with excellent action set pieces of good-enough performances from the main actors, but the movie is let down by a lack of threat from the bad guys and a serious lack of overall menace. The script is shocking, the story terrible, the acting is horrific, the editing is a nightmare, in general, avoid this movie at all costs.

Star Wars Episode Two: Attack of the ClonesPosted by tony in 2002, action, cinema, review, sci-fiThe second of the ‘new’ Star Wars movies is undoubtedly better than the first, giving us some decent action and dialog and poking a little fun at the Star Wars universe. This slick interpretation of a Philip K. Dick story (same name) is a high quality fast-paced twisty and interesting movie which provides humour, action and intrigue in good quantity and although it’s not perfect the flaws are forgiveable.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal SkullPosted by tony in 2008, action, cinema, comedy, reviewThis well paced yet gentle sequel to the first three Indy movies will entertain fans and families alike but it may not deliver enough punch to keep fans of tougher action movies entertained. Totally formulaic high-tec action movie that relies on the dialog and Willis’ delivery to stand above the crowd which amazingly succeeds giving us a fantastic funny fast paced and memorable cinema experience. Maintaining the same style and frantic pace of the first two movies, The Bourne Ultimatum provides a satisfying conclusion to the story of Jason Bourne and a slick, full and thrilling cinema experience. This heavily stylised (visually and morally) interpretation of a real historical event (Battle of Thermopylae) packs a visual punch and gives a cracking cinema experience while dividing audiences with its light plot and sparse dialog. |
