While amusing in places this animated comedy doesn’t have much in the way of value for adults (unlike other movies of this ilk) and we didn’t rush out to get the next two.

Madagascar 2 – Escape to AfricaPosted by admin in 2008, animation, blu-ray, comedy, reviewLaugh out loud funny in places, but never quite manages to reach the enjoyment value of the first one. A sweet and very funny emotionally engaging right of passage movie.

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the GalaxyPosted by tony in 2005, cinema, comedy, review, sci-fiIt was never going to be easy to turn the Hitchhiker’s Guide into a movie and while it was a decent attempt there are too many changes and not enough laughs to make this a true classic. Hard to define, impossible to explain, The Blues Brothers is a cult classic that you have to watch to appreciate. A classic movie which is as watchable today as it was in 1987, Lethal Weapon defines the buddy-cop action-comedy genre and is still top of the class over 20 years on. While not being rated as highly as some of Murphy’s work, personally I enjoyed The Golden Child and found it entertaining and different to the movies around at the time, having said that it might not hold up well after 23 years. A decent John Landis comedy which aims to be no more than a feel-good comedy and delivers just about exactly that. A classic Reitman comedy staring Bill Murray and Harold Ramis, Stripes is funny and embarassing in equal measure yet still delivers a fun feel good experience.

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon EmperorPosted by tony in 2008, action, blu-ray, comedy, reviewA lackluster and disappointing movie which feels more like a collection of one-off action sequences than a real story.

How to Lose Friends and Alienate PeoplePosted by tony in 2008, comedy, dvd, love story, reviewAn above average comedy with some engaging characters and just enough solid laughs to keep you going and Pegg holding the movie together. Funnier than I was expecting and despite some clunky scenes and some weaker than average plot issues worth watching. Zack and Miri is a touching and funny comedy with some true laugh out loud moments and a strong splattering of Kevin Smith’s trademark dialog. Don’t let bad reviews fool you, Hancock is a pretty good movie with a quick-turn in the latter half which gives this mildly comic superhero action flick a nice edge. Exceptional movie making and superb story telling make Wall-E a totally unique and memorable experience that is moving and funny and full of heart. Burn After Reading is witty, well paced black comedy with some very surprising ‘oh my god’ moments and although the ending feels rushed it doesn’t detract too badly from the superb performances throughout. Although Kung Fu Panda is funny, entertaining and has a lot of heart it falls short of being a real classic, thanks in part to what felt like a missing act in the second half. A turgid start full of cliche and obvious jokes slowly transforms into a much more entertaining second half of this comedy action flick, leaving you wondering what went wrong in the early stages. The frantic pace of this funny and endearing movie starts after the first murder and doesn’t let up until the different endings have been played out. Everything you expect from a Mel Brooks movie from the 70’s, anarchy, laughs, wit, parody and plot holes the size of a crater that you just don’t care about (and Gene Wilder, naturally). |
